According to Ronnie Whelan, editor of Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom magazine, kitchens are no longer small and function.

Indeed, they have come a long way and are now places for socialising as well as places to prepare and eat food.

"With a trend for more open-plan living, it is the hub of the home where all the family can congregate," she explained.

"It can cater for many different other activities and makes it worth spending the money on, as well as adding value to your property."

Ms Whelan said there are a number of trends in kitchen design at the moment, including high gloss finishes.

But the most fashionable looks at the moment mix and match different materials and colours and allow homeowners to create their own individual look, she stated.
